He gained experience playing in Chicago clubs. His career, however, really took off with his 1938 move to New York City.
He was an inductee into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998.
His family moved to Chicago, Illinois, soon after he was born.
He collaborated with many their musicians, including Louis Armstrong.
