American chess Grandmaster and chess author who was a two time U.S. Chess Champion.
He learned to play chess in 1923 watching his older brothers play.
He won the U.S. Chess Championship in 1945 and 1946, and in 2004 he received the highest honor from the United States Chess Federation, when he was made a "Dean of American Chess".
He was born to an Orthodox Jewish family.
He was in his prime around the time that chess legend Alexander Alekhine died.
