A Latvian chess master and composer of studies. The Latvian Gambit is named in honor of him.
He received third place at a Riga tournament in 1900.
He played for Latvia in the first unofficial Chess Olympiad at Paris.
His parents raised him in Bērzmuiža, Latvia.
He and Alexander Grischuk were both chess masters.
