Prima ballerina originated the title roles of The Dream, Enigma Variations and Manon, and had a their partnership with Anthony Dowell.
She was a rebellious teen at Sadler's Wells Ballet School, which made her all the more attractive a dancer to Ninette de Valois, whose company she joined in 1956.
Matching up perfectly with Dowell, the two danced in classics including Romeo and Juliet and more contemporary works like Jerome Robbins' Dances at a Gathering.
She was married to the dancer Michael Somes, and after their divorce she married a banker.
She danced with the great ballet star Rudolf Nureyev in a performance of Jazz Calendar.
