Anna Kamienska
Poet
Twentieth-century Polish poet, translator, Biblical commentary writer, children's author, and literary critic. Her translated works include In That Great River: A Notebook and Astonishments: Selected Poems of Anna Kamienska.
She was born in Krasnystaw, Poland as one of four daughters of Tadeusz Kamienski and Maria z Cekalskich. She published her first poems at age fourteen.
She lived in Lublin and taught in underground schools during the Nazi Occupation of Poland.
She married Jan Spiewak, a fellow poet and translator. The pair had two sons, born in 1949 and 1951.
She and Wislawa Szymborska, born three years apart, were both twentieth-century Polish poets.
