Prominent Portuguese neorealist author and journalist whose best-known novels include Gaibeus, Mares, and Fanga. He is perhaps most their for his 1962 work, Barranco de Cegos.
He started writing articles for his town's local newspaper when he was just fifteen years old.
He was arrested in 1944 for his membership in the Portuguese Communist Party.
He married Maria dos Santos Mota in 1936. His son, Antonio, was born in 1943.
He was born in the same country as writer Jose Saramago.
