Surgeon who invented the Blalock-Taussig Shunt, which saved the lives of numerous infants suffering from blue baby syndrome.
He studied at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and later became a surgery resident at Vanderbilt University.
His cardiac surgery technique became the world standard.
He was married twice and had three children.
Alan Rickman portrayed Blalock in HBO's 2004 docu-drama Something the Lord Made.
