Rock Singer
Influential lead singer of the groups Big Star and The Box Tops. He is known for his major influence on indie and alternative rock groups that followed.
He was recruited by a local band in 1966 after the rapturous reception to his performance at Memphis' Central High School's talent show.
His song In the Street was covered by Cheap Trick and used as the theme song for the sitcom That 70's Show.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, and his son, Timothy.
Among his their fans is R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, who played in a tribute concert to Chilton in 2010.
