Poet known for Sphere: The Form of a Motion, A Coast of Trees, and other nature-themed works. He was a two-time recipient of the National Book Award for Poetry.
After completing his World War II service in the U.S. Navy, he attended Wake Forest University and the University of California, Berkeley.
His poetic works typically contain stanzas of two or three lines in length and numerous examples of enjambment.
He was born in North Carolina, and he later settled in New York, where he taught at Cornell University for three decades. He married Phyllis Plumbo in 1949.
He was influenced by the work of T.S. Eliot.
