The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, she is best known for her novel-turned-play, Miss Lulu Bett. Her other works include A Daughter of the Morning (novel), Friendship Village (short stories), and Evening Clothes (play).
She worked as a journalist in Milwaukee and New York City.
She belonged to the National Women's Party and fought for female equality.
She married William L. Breese in 1928, when she was in her fifties.
She and Paula Vogel both won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
