Former dancer, most remembered for playing the title role in the ballet Carmen.
She met her future husband and collaborator, Roland Petit, at the Paris Opera Ballet when she was just nine years old.
She went on to star in a series of Hollywood movies after performing in Carmen.
She had one daughter, Valentine, with her husband Roland.
She and guitarist Nicolas Godin were both born in Paris.
