Yvonne Rainer
Dancer
Performance artist, filmmaker, dancer, and choreographer known for her experimental work. Was often mistaken as a minimalist artist.
She was introduced to dance and film at a young age.
She advocated the return of dance to its most basic elements in her 1965 written piece the "No Manifesto." She demonstrated the ideas expressed in this work in her dance piece "Trio A" from 1966.
She grew up in Northern California with self-proclaimed "radical" parents of Polish Jewish and Italian ancestry.
She studied dance with Merce Cunningham during the 1960s.
