Russian ballet dancer and choreographer, most recognized for dominating the Russian performing arts scene for over 30 years.
In 1946, he graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School.
In 1976, he was given the Order of Lenin award -- the highest honor given by the former Soviet Union.
He was born in Leningrad.
He and author Mahmoud Darwish were both awarded the Lenin Prize from the USSR during their careers.
