He was a storyboard artist with Osamu Tezuka's company Mushi Productions on Mighty Atom, which became Astro Boy in the U.S.
He directed the first 26 episodes of another influential mecha series, Brave Raideen, four years before starting the Gundam franchise.
He grew up in Odawara, the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan.
He worked with Enuka Okuma, who was one of the voice actors on his Gundam Wing anime series.
