Yeshayahu Leibowitz
Philosopher
Israeli public intellectual, polymath, and faculty member of Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He attended the University of Berlin in 1919, where he was a student of chemistry and philosophy. He later received his M.D. from the University of Basel in 1934.
He was the editor of the Encyclopaedia Hebraica.
He married Greta Leibowitz, and they had six children together. His sister was the renowned Biblical scholar Nechama Leibowitz.
He was awarded the Israel Prize in 1993, which Yitzhak Rabin threatened to boycott because of Leibowitz's advocacy for Israeli-Palestinian peace.
