Known as one of the "last innovators" in jazz and one of the greatest jazz composers and bandleaders of the twentieth century.
He started studying trumpet at the age of eleven and went on to attend Juilliard School of Music.
He was born with photographic memory and perfect pitch.
He raised a son named Woody
His trumpet playing was heavily influenced by the harmonic innovations of saxophonist John Coltrane.
