Realist and Color Field painter best known for his oil paint and pastel landscapes.
He spent his early years in Germany and, at age thirteen, moved to the United States, where he attended New York City's High School of Music and Art.
His prestigious awards included a Guggenheim fellowship and an Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
He and his artist wife, Emily Mason, had two daughters.
He studied abstract expressionist painting with Hans Hofmann at Hofmann's New York-based art school.
