Pioneering comic strip artist, cartoonist and animator who created the elegant strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.
He got his start in the Midwestern states as a graphic designer of posters and advertisements. Soon thereafter, he began creating comic strips for the Cincinnati Enquirer.
His New York Herald comic strip, Little Nemo, was hugely successful and gave him the freedom to work the vaudeville circuit as a speed-drawing chalk artist.
He was born in Spring Lake, Michigan.
He influenced Walt Disney and other well-known animators.
