William Stafford
Poet
Prolific American poet and 1970 U.S. Poet Laureate who won the National Book Award for Traveling Through the Dark. His numerous other works include In the Clock of Reason, Brother Wind, Passwords, and Wyoming Circuit.
He studied at the University of Kansas and taught at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon before earning a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
He was a pacifist and a conscientious objector during World War II.
He married Dorothy Hope Frantz in 1944. He and Frantz raised four children.
His writing style has been compared to that of renowned poet Robert Frost.
