William Shenstone
Poet
English poet and master gardener whose works include Schoolmistress and Elegies. He owned an expertly-landscaped estate called The Leasowes.
He studied at Pembroke College, Oxford and published his debut work -- Poems on various occasions, written for the entertainment of the author -- while he was still a student.
He wrote a 1741 letter in which he used the word "floccinaucinihilipilification," which is the lengthiest word in the English dictionary.
He was the child of Thomas Shenstone and Anne Penn. He neither married nor had children of his own.
His work was praised by the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns.
