He received his undergraduate education at Wayne State University.
He introduced the term friendly atheist into the intellectual lexicon, which suggested a person who understands that certain people will inevitably believe in God, even if no God exists.
He was brought up in Michigan.
He briefly taught at the University of Illinois where journalist John Chancellor studied.
