William M. Hoge
War Hero
Four-star U.S. Army general and engineer who oversaw the construction of a 1,519-mile Alaskan Highway.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1916 and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers.
He was given an impossible task: to construct a highway through wilderness, without reliable maps, yet he made it happen in just nine months.
He was married to Nettie Fredendall Hoge, who was later buried next to him at the Arlington National Cemetery.
He studied alongside future World War II general Omar Bradley at the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
