William Ernest Henley
Poet
British poet, editor, and literary critic whose best-known work is his Victorian poem "Invictus." His other works include a poetry collection entitled In Hospital and a work of literary criticism called Views and Reviews.
He suffered from tuberculosis as a child. The disease eventually necessitated the amputation of the lower portion of his left leg.
His daughter, Margaret, died at the age of five and became the inspiration for the character of Wendy in J.M. Barrie's classic children's novel Peter Pan.
He was married to Hannah Johnson Boyle, with whom he had a daughter.
He was a friend of author Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson, in fact, based his "Long John Silver" character upon Henley.
