About

British poet, editor, and literary critic whose best-known work is his Victorian poem "Invictus." His other works include a poetry collection entitled In Hospital and a work of literary criticism called Views and Reviews.

Before Fame

He suffered from tuberculosis as a child. The disease eventually necessitated the amputation of the lower portion of his left leg.

Trivia

His daughter, Margaret, died at the age of five and became the inspiration for the character of Wendy in J.M. Barrie's classic children's novel Peter Pan.

Family Life

He was married to Hannah Johnson Boyle, with whom he had a daughter.

Associated With

He was a friend of author Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson, in fact, based his "Long John Silver" character upon Henley.
