Democrat who served as Barack Obama's White House Chief of Staff from 2011 to 2012. He also served as the United States Secretary of Commerce under President Bill Clinton.
He practiced law before taking a position on the board of Fannie May in 1993.
He served on the board of Fannie Mae, the Federal National Mortgage Association, from 1993 to 1997.
He has six siblings and has been in a long marriage to wife Bernadette Keller.
He was preceded by Pete Rouse as Chief of Staff. Rouse served as interim Chief of Staff after Rahm Emanuel resigned to run for mayor of Chicago.
