Grammy Award-winning songwriter and former member of the bands Chicago and Sons of Champlin.
He was in the band The Opposite Six in high school.
He won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song in 1979 for "After the Love Has Gone."
He married his second wife Tamara Champlin, who is also a singer-songwriter, in 1982; he has a son, Will, and also has two children from a previous marriage.
He began to play the guitar because he was inspired by Elvis Presley.
