He moved with his family to Los Angeles in the 40's and served in the Navy during World War II.
He landed radio acting jobs after winning a Shakespeare-related competition in high school.
He is survived by one son and one daughter.
He co-starred with Martin Milner on the long-running police drama Adam-12.
