Will Carleton
Poet
American poet whose rural-themed works include Over the Hill to the Poor House, Betsy and I Are Out, and Farm Ballads. He published his final poetic work, A Thousand Thoughts with Index of Subjects, in 1908.
He attended Hillsdale College and recited his poem, "Rifts in the Cloud," at his 1869 graduation ceremony.
He worked as an editor for the Detroit Weekly Tribune during the 1870s.
He married Anne Goodell in Boston in the late 1870s. The couple moved to New York City in 1882.
He was influenced by the work of Walt Whitman.
