He co-founded MC5 in 1967 as a teenager.
His group MC5 blended aggressive garage rock music with left-wing politics.
His wife Margaret Saadi Kramer is also a film soundtrack producer.
While imprisoned on cocaine charges, he met the former jazz trumpeter for the Charlie Parker band.
