He was born in Awaji, Hyōgo and made his acting debut in the 1964 film, Abare Kishidō.
He served as the president of Ishihara Promotion.
His brother Tsunehiko Watase was also an actor.
He worked alongside fellow actor Fukikoshi Mitsuru.
