He quit school to become a folk singer in New York City following the divorce of his parents.
He refused treatment after being diagnosed with terminal cancer and instead began recording his final album with appearances from many of his closest friends, including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bob Thornton, and Tom Petty.
He married Tule Livingston in 1968, and after their divorce, he married Crystal Ann Brelsford on May 23, 1974.
He wrote Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Linda Ronstadt's Top 40 hit from 1978.
