Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who disappointed his conservative political backers by siding with the majority in Roe v. Wade.
He was Richard Nixon's first nominee to the court, and Nixon chose him to further his view of strict constructionism or allowing only the laws explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.
He used his position to give his views on everything from prison management to school segregation, voting in the case of the latter that busing could be used to desegregate.
He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. His grandfather was a Union soldier at the age of 14.
He served on the court with the more conservative William Rehnhquist, another Nixon appointee.
