She attended Capitol Hill High School. She signed with Decca Records, who were willing to sign a woman in the male-dominated music field of the time.
She was discovered in high school by Hank Thompson.
She married IBM programmer Wendell Goodman in 1961 and has two children.
She briefly dated Elvis Presley in 1955 while on tour with him.
