Politician and Democrat who became the first and only presidentially appointed mayor of Washington, D.C. in 1967. He also became D.C.'s first locally elected mayor in 1974.
He attended both Howard University's undergraduate program and law school.
He refused to order the shooting of rioters after the death of Martin Luther King Jr.. despite J. Edgar Hoover's urgings.
He married his first wife Bennetta Bullock in 1942 and was married to her until her death in 1991.
He was appointed as Washington D.C.'s first and only Mayor Commissioner by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
