Walter Kohn
Physicist
A theoretical physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998 for his research in understanding electronic properties of materials. He also played an integral role in the development of density functional theory.
He arrived in England in 1938 as part of the their Kindertransport rescue operation, where the UK took in nearly 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi territories.
He became a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1969.
Both of his parents were killed in the Holocaust.
He won the Nobel Prize the year before Ahmed Zewail did.
