Soviet chess master who was the Moscow Champion in 1947, 1956, and 1959. He also helped to train Vasily Smyslov to the World Championship.
He didn't begin taking part in serious competition until after World War II.
He died of a heart attack while playing in a tournament and is remembered best for making significant contributions to chess openings.
He was born and raised in Moscow, Russia.
He played during the time of chess legend Paul Keres.
