She grew up in Texas. When she was seventeen years old, she met Johnny cash while on summer vacation.
Her marriage to Johnny Cash was not always luxurious; at the beginning of their union, they lived from paycheck to paycheck.
She was the daughter of Irene Robinson and Thomas Liberto, and she grew up with an older brother and a younger sister. She later had four daughters with Johnny Cash.
Her daughter, Rosanne Cash, also broke into singing and songwriting.
