Known best for his roles in films directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, Shah also appeared in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet and Farah Khan's Happy New Year.
He made his movie debut in the 2011 Hindi film Saat Khoon Maaf.
He was cast in the role of Mastan in the 2014 film Ganglords of 1985.
His parents, Ratna Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah, both had successful acting careers, as did his half-sister Heeba Shah and brother Imaad Shah.
He and Shah Rukh Khan were both in the cast of the 2014 film Happy New Year.
