She started out acting and dancing in the Midwest before coming to Hollywood in the early 1920s.
Although she made the transition to talking films successfully, she shunned fame, failed to find a suitable studio for her talents, and decided to retire.
Her first husband, Charles Farrell, was also a noted Hollywood actor and served as mayor of Palm Springs from 1948 to 1954.
She starred in director Alfred Hitchcock's debut film The Pleasure Garden, which was released in 1925.
