Retired lock forward who played for South Africa's national rugby union team from 2001 to 2011, serving as the team's captain from 2007 to 2008.
He attended the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
He played Super Rugby for the Lions and the Bulls.
He raised two daughters, Giselle and Jaime.
In 2008, he became the first international captain to defeat New Zealand's national rugby union team since Martin Johnson of England did it in 2003.
