Bengali and Hindi actor who had numerous high-profile roles during his 40-year career, including a part in Moner Moto Mon. He earned a BAFTA Best Actor Award nomination in 1986 for his role in A Passage to India.
He earned a degree in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta.
In 1991, 1996, 1999, and 2004 he won parliamentary candidate elections for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He married Maya Bhate Banerjee. The couple had two daughters named Dia and Keya.
He appeared in the 1998 film, Moner Moto Mon, which was directed by Montazur Akbar.
