Longtime rugby union player who spent the majority of his playing career with Counties Manukau. He became a coach shortly after his playing career ended and coached ASM Clermont Auvergne from 2006 until 2014.
He debuted with the New Zealand club Counties Manukau in 1980 and made his coaching debut with Bay of Plenty in 2000.
He took over as coach of Scotland in 2014.
He grew up in New Zealand and later played rugby for a couple of French squads.
He served as Scotland's rugby union head coach whereas Brian Ashton served as England's.
