Founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a militant organization whose goal was to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka.
He was born to Thiruvenkadam Velupillai and Vallipuram Parvathy in Velvettithurai and witnessed what he considered discrimination against Tamil people while growing up.
A warrant was once out for his arrest for plotting to assassinate the former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, in May 1991.
He was married to Mathivathani Erambu, and he had three children.
He was charged with plotting to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
