Remembered for his acclaimed career in Bengali Cinema, this iconic Indian actor starred in such films as Nayak (The Hero), Chiriyakhana, and Antony Firingee. He was the recipient of many honors, including a National Film Award for Best Actor and numerous Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards.
As a young man, he studied at the University of Calcutta's Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration. During this period, he also performed with his family's amateur theater company, Suhrid Samaj.
He died of a heart attack while filming an early 1980s movie titled Ogo Bodhu Shundori.
His marriage to Gauri Chatterjee resulted in a child named Gautam.
He appeared in numerous movies with fellow Indian film legend Sabitri Chatterjee.
