He was riding great horses as a young man and learning from his father Roy, an eight-time world champion. He joined the PRCA in 2008 and was 18 years old when he first competed in a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

His father is ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Roy Cooper. He has brothers named Clif and Clint, who are cowboys as well, and a sister named Shada.
