He played the drums in several bands during his high school days, using the school's built-in studio to record tracks.
He collaborated with My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, R.E.M., and Bill Frisell.
His father was the singer and songwriter Layng Martine Jr.
His Oregon studio Flora Recording and Playback hosted T-Bone Burnett who worked on a record with The Decemberists.
