Prominent figure in the Golden Age of Hong Kong cinema. He directed the films Aces Go Places 3, Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, and The Swordsman.
He worked as an editor for a Chinese newspaper and worked at a cable TV station.
He received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 16th Busan International Film Festival for his contributions to Hong Kong cinema in 2011.
He was born into a family of 16 siblings.
His Once Upon a Time in China series featured Jet Li as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hung.
