Remembered best for his BAFTA-winning performance in the 1958 war movie The Key and for his Academy Award-nominated role as Walter Morel in the 1960 film Sons and Lovers, this acclaimed British actor also played numerous supporting and character roles, appearing in such films as Gandhi, Battle of Britain, and The Dawning.
In the years leading up to World War II, he attended the their Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and performed in several London theatrical productions.
He received an Emmy Award and an Emmy nomination for his work in, respectively, The Invincible Mr. Disraeli and The Count of Monte Cristo.
