He earned a public administration and law degree from the University of Mississippi, Oxford.
He held his first political office as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for fifteen years.
He has two sons, Chester and Tyler, with wife Patricia Thompson.
He revealed that George W. Bush influenced his resignation in his memoir Herding Cats: A Life in Politics.
