He matriculated from the University of Cambridge, where he majored in English.
In addition to his journalistic successes, he was also one of the five founders of Factory Records, a record label based out of Britain.
He had two children with his second wife, Hilary, named Oliver and Isabel.
He once served as the manager of Joy Division, a band in which Ian Curtis was the lead singer.
