He was runnerup for the American Speed Association Rookie of the Year award in 1992.
He made his NASCAR debut at the 1995 Sears Auto Center 125 at Milwaukee.
His father Dean Roper was a Missouri racing legend in his own right.
His was the third fatal accident of the 2000 season; before him, Kyle Petty's son, Adam, died in a collision.
